Tijuana Straits

Like most of Kem Nunn`s novels, surfing is part of the atmosphere of TIJUANA STRAITS. His hero Sam Fahey`s background includes surfing, among other things (some much less savory), and the novel is set in Southern California. The story begins with a Mexican activist named Magdalena, who has been beaten nearly to death for her efforts on behalf of the environment. Fahey rescues her from her tormentors, and begins a long cycle of redemptive behavior that will culminate in a series of scenes that lend the novel the label literary thriller. Our American King

In the near-future, America has suffered total socioeconomic collapse with the richest fraction of the population hording all the food and resources inside guarded compounds. Outside, the starving masses have turned to madness and murder. Mary and John, a middle-aged married couple, are starving to death in the desolate remains of the suburbs outside Washington, DC, living off acorns and grass, and constantly threatened by an enormous man-eating pig. Then John has a vision of an American King and the couple sets off to find him. Narrated by Mary, a no-nonsense and slightly cantankerous old woman, OUR AMERICAN KING tells of the bloody rise of a new American kingdom. David Lozell Martin`s prose is bawdy and rich, and the tale oscillates between outlandish comedy and terrible nightmare. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

The Third Translation

A man`s obsession with the ancient past leaves him ill-equipped to cope with present-day problems in this literary academic thriller. Walter Rothschild is an extremely self-involved Egyptologist attempting to decode the mysterious Stela of Paser, a funerary stone which apparently can be translated in three different ways. He`s so consumed with his translations that he barely notices what`s going on around him. This particular quality led to his divorce and his estrangement from his daughter Zenobia. It also makes him the perfect patsy for Erin, a young woman who has late-night sex with him in the deserted British Museum and subsequently vanishes with a priceless piece of papyrus related to the Stela. His quest to retrieve the item drags him into a bizarre intrigue involving a modern Egyptian cult, while damaging his already tenuous relationships with Zenobia, his colleagues, and his friends.
